Are you new to the plein air adventure? Have you tried it but been discouraged?
Each Spring I can barely contain my excitement as the plein air season approaches, but it
wasn’t always that way. I considered quitting many times in the first few years because I
learned the hard way that PLEIN AIR IS NOT FOR SISSIES! I want to help you avoid
learning the hard way. We work very hard at a plein air event from sunup to sundown; the
challenges are many and daunting, but that is exactly why the rewards are so sweet!
We must contend with crazy weather, bugs, poison ivy, bugs, cu rious and talkative
onlookers, bugs and more – oh did I already say bugs? Also, when wil l I eat and when will I
sleep? What should I bring with me? How can I possibly produce a painting in a few
Going into my 10th year of participating in plein air events I’ve got a pretty good handle on
what wi ll make it a fun, and reasonably easy experience. I’ll share my insights and hints to
help you avoid some of the common pitfalls and problems that make many artists give up
on plein air. We’ll talk about equipment, scouting and prep, and how to take care of
yourself. We’ll also discuss the biggie: how to produce a good painting in a VERY short
time on location. Whatever your medium is, you will benefit from these guidelines
about how to choose what to paint and how to GET IT DONE!
